Number one: what HVAC technicians are paid
Wages for residential HVAC service techs in the U.S. cluster in the mid-$20s to low-$40s per hour. The federal wage survey puts the national median for HVAC mechanics and installers in the high $20s; a senior service tech who can sell and close in a strong metro clears $40, sometimes well past it with performance pay. Installers and helpers sit lower, lead techs and those with commercial or controls experience sit higher.
Treat those as ranges, not targets. The number that matters to your pricing isn’t what the market pays a technician. It’s what your technician costs you per hour that actually gets invoiced, and that number is always larger than the wage by more than owners expect.
Number two: what that hour really costs the shop
Two adjustments turn a wage into a true cost per billable hour:
Payroll burden. Employer payroll taxes, workers comp (HVAC rates are not cheap), health benefits, paid time off, and retirement match usually add 25 to 35 percent on top of the wage. A $30/hr tech at 30 percent burden is a $39/hr loaded wage before the truck leaves the lot.
Billable hours, not clock hours.A tech on the clock 40 hours bills maybe 20 to 30 of them. Drive time, parts runs, quotes, callbacks, training, and the Friday afternoon that didn’t fill all get paid but never invoiced. Overhead has to be recovered from the billed hours alone, so that is the denominator.
Put them together with overhead and you get the shop’s break-even hourly rate: loaded wage plus overhead per billable hour. Bill below it and every hour loses money before you’ve earned a dollar of profit.
Number three: the billed rate, worked through a three-truck shop

Why the “average HVAC hourly rate” is the wrong anchor
Shops bill anywhere from roughly $100 to $250 an hour for residential service, and owners love to set their rate by picking a spot in that range. The range is real; using it as your anchor is the mistake. A one-truck owner-operator with $4,000 of monthly overhead can bill $120 and do fine. Your rate has to come from yours.
Quick sanity check: if your billed labor rate is less than about 2.5× your senior tech’s loaded wage, either your overhead is unusually lean or your rate hasn’t been recalculated since it was set. The second one is far more common.
The billed rate is the input to every flat rate in your book
Most residential shops don’t quote hourly; they quote a flat price per task. That doesn’t make the hourly rate irrelevant, it makes it the foundation. Every flat-rate task price is task hours × your billed labor rate, plus parts at markup. Paying techs more without giving the raise away
Good techs are hard to hire and easy to lose, so wages go up. There are three places the money can come from, and only one of them is painless. First, billable hours: in the example shop, raising each tech from 25 to 27 billable hours a week drops overhead per billable hour from $55.38 to about $51.28, which more than pays for a $3/hr raise ($3.90 loaded).
